Construction Materials:

Since the dawn of civilization, the earth has been the principal source of raw building materials. Sands, gravels, bitumen, and a myriad of other natural resources have become essential to the building of both shelter and infrastructure of the modern world. The ever-increasing global demand for aggregates has led to an explosion of quarrying, with the extraction of these building materials, either from natural deposits, or blasted from rock faces.

Aggregates, when mixed with cement, become ready-mixed concrete products such as ready-mix concrete, concrete blocks and pre-stressed and pres cast concrete products.
When mixed with bitumen this creates asphalt, a material responsible for the smooth and durable driving surfaces on roads and used in many infrastructure projects such as highway networks, airport runways even roofs on buildings and homes.

Aggregates are the world most utilized construction material and the degree to which they are mined and utilized can be seen as an indicator of a country’s infrastructure sophistication. Not only are aggregates key components in the building and upkeep of highways, streets and other paved surfaces, they are also the principal ingredient in the production of specified grades of concrete. They constitute between sixty to seventy prevent of the mix and they determine the strength of a particular mix.

Concrete is the world most utilized man made building product and probably the world's most versatile and durable construction material. In its simplest form, concrete is a mixture of paste and aggregates. The paste, composed of cement and water, coats the surface of the fine and coarse aggregates. Through a chemical reaction called hydration, the paste hardens and gains strength to form the rock-like mass known as concrete. Within this process lies the key to a remarkable trait of concrete: it's plastic and malleable when newly mixed, strong and durable when hardened. These qualities explain why one material, concrete, can build major construction projects such as tunnels, bridges, skyscrapers, bridges, sidewalks and superhighways, houses and dams.
